Your body design pattern comprises of several components like your facial shape and lines, body shape, proportion, color, texture etc. These components teach you very specific details about your body which in turn motivate you to love your body shape and image.

Shape is generally seen as a flat space enclosed by a line that has turned to meet itself. It is also the outline of a form; form being a three- dimensional subject, such as your body or parts of your body. Dressing a body according to its shape is usually done with respect to different geometric shapes.

These geometric shapes take on the effects of the lines that surround them, so that a triangle assumes the effect of diagonal lines- active, restless and/or aggressive. Understanding your body shape allows you to achieve your goal of creating harmony between your body shape and the silhouettes of your outfits.

A ‘silhouette’ is a geometric shape created by the outline of a garment or dress. A perfect harmony between the shape and lines created by the garment and the shapes and lines of your body creates the right impact.

There are basically six types of body shapes: ‘X’ shape, ‘A’ shape or the triangle, ‘V’ shape or the inverted triangle, Oval shape, Standard shape or Rectangle and the Hourglass shape. You have an inverted triangle body shape if you have a proportionally large bust, or broad shoulders, or both. People with this body shape have narrow hips with a well-defined waist. You most likely are a long-legged vertical body shape with proportionally slim legs. You may also have a flat bottom.

Bottoms

Bottoms can be full length in order to emphasize the long length of the legs and they can also have some details like buttons or patterns.

Wide leg cargo and trouser cut pants are most suitable because they tend to flatter the lower part of your body but make sure you draw them in at the waist- line with a belt.

Pleats and gathers on bottom can also draw attention to the lower half of the body.

Flared skirts with prints and details would be most suitable for dressing an inverted triangle body shape because they tend to make the hip area appear fuller and creates a proportionate look.

Other suitable styles for skirts would include A-line skirts and tulip skirts. If you have flat hips then try to add volume to your lower half through textured fabric, prints, pleats and pockets in your skirts.

Wide – Leg Pants

Tops and dresses

Tops and dresses with a V- neckline would be most suitable. In order to give slimming effects to the upper part of your body create vertical lines in your upper part with vertical stripes in your tops.

Always go for the tops that tend to accentuate the waist- line, like tops with banding at the waist or wrap style tops. Fitted tops are a good choice because they tend to tone down the upper part and also accentuate the waist.

Shoulders should not be padded or fluffy because that will tend to make the shoulders look broader. It would be best to wear a sleeveless top or a top with fitted long sleeves to create the desired look.

Dropped shoulder points, shoulder-slits and cut-outs could be a good choice for the style in tops and dresses.

Even narrow or thin straps will not work for your figure because they tend to make the shoulders look broader. ‘A’ line dresses with a perfect fit at the waist would create a look of natural fullness in the lower part.

V Neckline Top

Jackets

Single-breasted and well-fitted jackets with fewer details on pockets, collar etc. would be most suitable. Jackets should be left unbuttoned to create a feeling of vertical line movement in the upper part of the body.

Accessories

Bright colored belts or metallic belts can be worn to accessorize the bottoms.

Fabric

Fabric for top and dresses should be soft, flowing and drapey because it softens the broadness of your shoulders. Dresses and tops should be less textured and should have less or no details on the shoulders.

Colors

Light and bold colors in skirts and pants can be worn to balance out the body shape.

Footwear

Stylish footwear in neutral and bright shades can be a good choice. Buckles, studs and other latest trends in shoes could be a great choice for the footwear.
