Do you know your body shape? Learning about your body shape and dressing up accordingly provides you with some knowledge about the natural silhouette needed in your clothing. Your body shape is defined by the major parts of your body, which includes your shoulders, waist, and hip/thighs. You have to learn to find the width relationship between your shoulders, waist, and hips/thighs to find your natural silhouette in clothing.
What is a Standard Body Shape?
You have a Standard Body Shape if:
- Your shoulders are as wide as your hips/thighs. Your waist is normally 7-9’’ smaller than your bust and your hips are 0-2’’ larger than your bust.
- All your body parts i.e., your hips/thighs, shoulders, and waist are well-proportioned and there is a complete harmony between the lines of all your body silhouettes.
- You might have a waist that is either as wide or is slightly curved, but it is in proportion with the lines of your hips/thighs and shoulders. If this body proportion matches with an angular facial shape, then you have a perfectly angular, standard body structure.
How to Dress a Standard Body Shape
The best part of having a Standard Body Shape is that you can enjoy the privileges of wearing almost anything that is well-fitted for your body. Let’s see what dressing techniques can be used to dress up a Standard Body Shape.
- Lines: The lines of your clothing should be straight and crisp.
- Fabrics: The fabrics used should be soft, silky or stretchable that tend to take the natural shape of your body. If you have a slightly curved waistline, then it can be highlighted with the help of a narrow belt.
- Prints: Prints used could include checks, stripes, and other geometrical designs to maintain the natural balance of the shape.
- Tops: Fitted crop tops, belted tops or slightly fitted waist length tops would be a good choice. Tops or the shirts should accentuate your wait-line. Wear collared shirts that are well- fitted. Wear your tops or shirts in a manner that the lines of your shoulders never extend beyond your hips. So, the basic tip is to avoid wearing shoulder pads
- Pants/Jeans: Wear straight leg jeans or a boot- cut pant. Mid-waist skinny jeans or fitted cotton trousers would look good. Ankle- length fitted jeans with a short-fitted top would actually provide the right curve to the waist of a standard body shape.
- Skirts: Skirts should be fitted and not flared, and they should not taper at the bottom. Straight line skirts or less pleated skirts with short- fitted tops would make an awesome combination for the standard body shape.
- Dresses: Your dresses like the silhouette of your garments should follow the natural lines of your body. Straight line dresses with a curve at the waist would give a little shape to your waist. You can also use belts to add the curve to your waist.
- Necklines: Straight, Low necklines like the V- neckline looks good on straight line garments, as they tend to follow the straight silhouette of the garment. You can also carry oval or rectangular necklines for adding a little variety to your wardrobe.
- Jackets: Wear soft, mid length jackets with a slight fitting at the waist- line. This will shape up your waistline and give a soft feminine look to your natural body shape. Your jackets should be tailored to fit the lines of your body.
Dressing up a standard body shape is easy, as you just have to follow the natural lines of your body shape. Just add a little curve to your waistline and you are good to go.
