Clearing the Wardrobe Clutter- Finding the Right Thing to Wear at the Right Time

“I find the greatest thing in the world is not so much where we stand, but in which direction we are moving.”

-Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

Garima opened her closet to find a suitable dress for a very important formal evening event in her office. And the next thing that her family could hear was “Oh Dear God! I have nothing suitable to wear to the event.” Doesn’t it look like a familiar scenario. Garima’s wardrobe is filled with clothes of all types: tops, skirts, dresses, pants, and much more. She has almost all the colors and fabrics in her closet, but still, she doesn’t have the right dress to wear at the right time.

Fishing for the right dress in your ‘Wardrobe Clutter’ is a herculean task, and you really need some superpowers to find something that is actually worth wearing. We usually keep shopping for clothes without even thinking whether it will suit us or not, and the result is that a dress that looks good on your body in the trial room of a store loses its significance as ‘the new trendy dress I bought’ over a period of time. The result is an enormous pile of clothes in the closet with no clue to what is correct for your body shape and what’s not.

So, why not solve this dilemma by following some simple wardrobe rules:

  1. Get rid of the things that you haven’t worn in a year, as you are definitely not going to wear them EVER. The funny part of such a situation has been well explained by Betty Halbreich. She says “I say get rid of things you don’ wear because they don’t get any younger. So, don’t love the ghosts in your wardrobe so much that you end up waiting for the time till some retro fashion strikes back.
  2. Before buying something from a store look at your body shape in the mirror, and try to find out the best things from your wardrobe. This actually means things that accentuate your figure, and give you the actual million dollar look that you desire.
  3. Now, you have lots of designer clothes that you really don’t wish to part with, and you would have spent a fortune to buy those clothes. So, don’t throw them, as they might really come in handy sometimes. Keep them in a separate wardrobe or in a separate section of your wardrobe.
  4. Arrange your wardrobe for various places, occasions and events. Sort them into Business, Business Casuals, Casual, Exercise, and formal or semi formal evening attire categories. This will help you in finding the right thing to wear at the right time.
  5. Mix and match your clothes to find the perfect attire. Match a certain top with 2 or 3 skirts or casual pants, and arrange them accordingly in your wardrobe.
  6. Last but not the least shop for styles that suit you, and don’t waste your money on things that don’t suit your style. Fashion is not only about the style that is trending, but also about giving you the final look that makes you look beautiful the way you want yourself to be.
